Moving Courses from Moodle to Canvas
To import a Moodle course into Canvas, first create a backup file of the course.
- Go the Moodle course
- Go to the Administration block
- Click Backup
- Uncheck the Include Enrolled Users box. This will make the file size much smaller as it will remove all student data from the backup file.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. To take everything, click Jump to final step.
- Moodle will begin to think. Once the Backup file is created, click Continue.
- Find the file in the User Private Backup Area. It should be the topmost file, as evidenced by the time and date. Click Download.
- Go to the Canvas course. On the Home screen, click the Import Existing Content button.
- From the Import Content drop down menu, select Moodle 1.9/2.x.
- Click the Choose File button and upload the Moodle backup file.
- If you want all content from that course file, check the All content option. If you’d like to choose which items you’d like imported, check the Select specific content option. When the file. When the import process is done, you’ll be presented with options of what to retain.
- Consider the Options button to Adjust events and due dates. If checked, this tells Canvas to adjust any due dates currently in the course and shifts them according to how much it is told to shift them using the start date of the original course and the start date of this course. **This is the only opportunity to mass change the dates at one time.** This process will get the due dates close but they will still need finer adjustment.
- Click the red Import button. Canvas will process the file and upload the content to the course. Once done, any issues will be noted and the content can be accessed by clicking Modules in the course menu.
