All Grades Disappear in an Assignment or Quiz After Using ‘Assign To’ – Canvas

Summary

In Canvas New Quizzes, if an instructor edits the “Assign To” field to give a specific student an extra attempt and removes “Everyone,” all other students’ grades disappear from the Gradebook. To restore the grades, the instructor must re-add “Everyone” in the “Assign To” field. Always use a separate “Assign To” entry for individual students without removing the general assignment group to avoid this issue.

Body

Issue:
An instructor gives a student an additional attempt by editing the “Assign To” field in a New Quiz, but after saving, all previous student grades disappear from the Gradebook.

🎯 Cause:

In Canvas New Quizzes, when you modify the “Assign To” field and remove "Everyone", you unintentionally restrict the quiz to just the listed student(s). As a result:

  • Only those assigned can access the quiz.

  • All other students’ attempts, submissions, and grades are hidden or removed from the Gradebook.

The data is not deleted, but it becomes inaccessible because the quiz is no longer assigned to them.

✅ Solution:

To restore all grades and visibility:

  1. Go to the quiz and click Edit.

  2. Scroll down to the Assign To section.

  3. Click Add and type Everyone (or Everyone Else, if needed).

  4. Set the original Due, Available From, and Until dates for the general assignment.

  5. Click Save.

Once “Everyone” is re-added, grades and submissions will reappear in the Gradebook.

📝

Best Practice:

  • When giving extra attempts or different dates, do not remove “Everyone”.

  • Instead, add an additional “Assign To” entry box for the specific student(s).

  • This ensures existing student data remains intact.
