Outlook synchronization logs in Inbox

Outlook "Synchronization Log" messages in inbox

Occasionally users report receiving "synchronization log" messages in their Outlook inbox. Often the user has no idea why these messages are being delivered.

For example the content will look something like this:

8:41:42     Synchronizing server changes in folder 'NEWS'
8:41:42     Downloading from server 'https://outlook.office365.com/mapi/emsmdb/?MailboxId=17b253d1-c9'
8:41:42     2 item(s) changed read-state in offline folder

This indicates that the user has a sub-folder in their Outlook mailbox called NEWS.
That day Outlook compared the folder on the user's desktop computer with that same folder on the Exchange server.
Outlook found there were 2 differences and synchronized those changes.

These log message are a tool used to troubleshoot issues where email messages show up one place but not another, for example: in the Outlook desktop app but not in the Outlook web interface.

These synchronization log messages can be turned off by doing the following:

1. In Outlook, click on File in the upper left

2. Select Options in the left menu, near the bottom

3. Select Advanced in the left menu

4. Scroll down to the Other section

5. Uncheck the box labeled Enable troubleshooting logging (requires restarting Outlook)

6. Click OK (see below)

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Reopen Outlook.

This should stop these emails from being placed in your inbox.
