Filtering in SupportNET

A self-guided training and Information course has been created in Canvas to assist Faculty and Staff with SupportNET.
All faculty & staff that already have SupportNET access can enroll in the course

To enroll in the SupportNET Canvas Course for self-guided training/information click here >> SupportNET - Faculty/Staff

NOTE:  The information below can be found in the SupportNET Canvas Course for Faculty/Staff > Module: SupportNET Filtering 2.0 > Filter by Attributes.

Filter by Attributes

The list of attributes available is based on what data is being sent from Banner (SIS) as student attributes. Click the Add Attribute icon  to filter on several possible criteria. Within the Additional Filters modal, a check mark displays next to each section that has a filter added. Click the Delete icon  to clear the Attributes filter.

  • Filter by students that have any value for a given attribute assigned to them.
  • Filter by students that do not have a value assigned to them for a given attribute.
  • Filter by students who have a specific value for the given attribute.

Which option you use depends on what you are trying to find, and how the information is being sent to SupportNET.

Review the following example scenarios for filtering students:

  1. SupportNET is receiving an attribute called Advisor.
  • To find students assigned to a [specific] advisor, select Advisor from the drop-down list of attributes, and select the radio button for "Specific Value" and type [Ad visor's Name] to return all students assigned to that advisor.

PRO TIP:  Use Asterisk (*) as a wild card if you aren’t sure on spelling and/or to see all students assigned (Primary, Secondary, etc.) to specific advisor.

Example:     Amanda Eller or A*Eller = students assigned to Amanda as Primary

*Amanda Eller* = all students assigned to Amanda (primary and/or secondary advisor)

  • To find students who aren't assigned to any advisor, change your radio button selection to "Not Assigned to Student" to return all students who do not have an advisor assigned to them.

PRO TIP:  Filter further by currently enrolled Cohort(s)

  1. SupportNET is receiving an attribute for academic status called "Academic Standing" for each student, and the values that might be sent from Banner include "Academic Disqualification," "Academic Suspension," “Beginning Probation,” “Good Standing,” and more.
  • To find all students that have been suspended, select Academic Standing from the drop-down list, select the radio button labeled "Specific Value" and use the drop-down menu to select “Academic Suspension”. This would return the students who have the Academic Standing attribute with a value of "Academic Suspension."
  • You could use this same approach to find all students with an attribute of "Good Standing," etc.
  1. SupportNET is sending a numeric attribute such as GPA and you want to find values above or below a certain threshold.
  • Select GPA (Cumulative) from the drop-down list and select the radio button labeled "Specific Value."
  • Select the desired operator from the list provided (e.g. =, >, <).
  • Type the desired value (e.g. 2.0).
  1. SupportNET is receiving an attribute called Current SE Athlete (True or Not Assigned).
  • To find all student athletes, select Current SE Athlete (True or Not Assigned) from the drop-down list of attributes, and select the radio button for "Assigned to Student" to return all students who have the attribute.
  • To find students who aren't athletes, change your radio button selection to "Not Assigned to Student" to return all students who do not have the Current SE Athlete (True or Not Assigned) attribute.

You also have the option within the attribute section to add additional attributes/values into the filter.

This creates an "And' search with each attribute added. So, for example, if I first select the attribute GPA (Cumulative) with the "Specific Value" > 3.0, my filter will include all students who have a GPA > than 3.0. If I click the Add Attribute button and select Major 1 (Degree 1) with the specific value of "Accounting," my list of students would be filtered to students who have a GPA >3.0 AND are Accounting majors.  I could then narrow the list even further using one of the ‘Currently Enrolled’ cohorts.

There is currently not a way to perform an "or" search. However, you can create a "between" search for numeric values by using a less than and a greater than value for the same attribute. For example, you could filter for cumulative GPA >1.99 AND <2.51 to get the list of those students with GPAs between 2.0 and 2.5. To do this, you would add the attribute GPA (Cumulative) TWICE (once for < and the other for >).

****NOTE****

We RARELY* use the ‘Term’ field in Attributes … do not click in that field.  If you accidentally click there, you’ll need to clear all filters and start over!

*Exceptions are limited and include a string of data (i.e.:  Activity; Greek Organizations) where the term is listed in the Overview
