Accessibility Guide: Making Equations Accessible

✅ 1. Use the Canvas Equation Editor

Canvas provides a built-in Equation Editor within the Rich Content Editor (RCE) that supports LaTeX syntax. This tool allows you to create mathematical expressions that are accessible to screen readers and assistive technologies.

Steps to use the Equation Editor:

  1. Open the Rich Content Editor in Canvas (available in Pages, Assignments, Discussions, etc.).

  2. Click on the Insert Math Equation button (represented by the π symbol).

  3. Use the editor to input your equation using LaTeX syntax or the provided tools.

  4. Insert the equation into your content.

Using this method ensures that the equations are rendered in a way that is compatible with assistive technologies.

✅ 2. Avoid Using Images for Equations

While it's possible to insert images of equations, this practice is discouraged because images are not inherently accessible. If you must use an image:

  • Provide descriptive alt text that conveys the same information as the equation.

  • Ensure that the image is of high quality and clearly legible.

However, whenever possible, use the Equation Editor to create accessible equations directly within Canvas.

✅ 3. Utilize the Accessibility Checker

Canvas includes an Accessibility Checker within the Rich Content Editor that helps identify and fix common accessibility issues. Before publishing your content:Instructure+1Instructure+1

  1. Click on the Accessibility Checker icon (represented by a human figure with a checkmark).

  2. Review any issues identified, including those related to equations.

  3. Follow the prompts to make necessary corrections.

This tool assists in ensuring that all content, including equations, meets accessibility standards.
