Remote Computer Labs - Chromebook

Overview

This article covers how to connect your Chromebook to an on-campus computer lab.

VPN Setup

Note: The VPN is only necessary for people accessing the remote labs from off-campus. If you are on-campus, jump to the 'App' section

  1. Click the time at the bottom right corner of the screen
  2. Click the gear icon to open the Settings menu
  3. In the Network section, click Add Connection.
  4. Click Add OpenVPN / L2TP.
  5. Enter the configuration settings as follows:
    1. Server hostname: 150.201.143.95
    2. Service name: SEMO Student VPN
    3. Provider type: L2TP/IPSec + pre-shared key
    4. Username: Your SE Key
    5. Password: Your SE Password
    6. Pre-shared key: Bj6Q7gCymVfYZqpsAx19
  6. Click Connect

 

App

After setting up the VPN, students will need to download the Remote Desktop App. If the Google Play Store is already enabled, please skip to step 6.

  1. From the bottom right of your screen, open the Quick Settings Panel
  2. Click the Settings icon
  3. Scroll down until the Google Play Store option is present. Next to it should be a button labeled Turn On
    *IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE GOOGLE PLAY STORE OPTION, THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL NOT WORK FOR YOUR CHROMEBOOK. PROCEED TO ALTERNATE REMOTE DESKTOP SECTION BELOW
  4. Click the Turn On button
  5. When the terms of service appear, scroll through and click Accept.
  6. Search for Microsoft Remote Desktop in the search bar and click to install the Microsoft Remote Desktop app, which is free
  7. After installation, you must open the app and accept the agreement that it presents

Alternative Remote Desktop 

If your Chromebook is not compatible with the Google Play Store, it should be able to access the Chrome Web Store. 

  1. From the bottom left of your screen click on the circle and look for the Chrome Web Store among your Chromebook’s applications.
  2. Once in the Chrome Web Store Search for an app called “xtralogic RDP client
  3. Click Add to Chrome
  4. Click Add app

 

Connecting to a computer

  1. Check that the SEMO STUDENT VPN is CONNECTED
  2. Visit https://remoteaccess.labstats.com/southeast-missouri-state-university
  3. Click Connect next to any of the listed computers
  4. Click Download on the pop-up window
  5. Find the downloaded file and click to run it – either from the task bar at the bottom or from the Downloads folder
  6. When the remote desktop program (either Microsoft Remote Desktop or Xtralogic RDP) opens you may be prompted to validate an SSL Certificate. If prompted, click Accept.
  7. Enter your Southeast email address and password when prompted.
